In the deluxe edition of her third studio album Vacancy: Late Checkout, D.C. native Ari Lennox expands her neo-soul foundation with a more contemporary sound, blending synths, basslines, and reggaeton influences to explore the raw, intimate, and vulnerable realities of modern romance.
Vocals, intentional instrumentation, and lyrical storytelling are three things to expect when pressing play on an Ari Lennox album. From the sound of trumpets functioning as their own voice within a song to subtle piano melodies and lyrics that explore the complexities of relationships, Lennox establishes the musical and emotional foundation of Vacancy. Disc 2 builds upon that foundation, introducing more of a reggaeton influence, revealing a musically distinct side of the album while expanding on its original themes. Here, she explores the contemporary and chaotic side of romance that many people experience.
Building on the original 15-song release of Vacancy, the eight additional tracks push Disc 2 into a more contemporary side of R&B, examining relationships in the social media and digital age. “Hookah Baby” presents a classic party atmosphere while reflecting on self-love, confidence, and believing in oneself enough to “fly” toward joy. In “Show Me,” she sings, “show me you ain’t afraid of L-U-V, everyone needs somebody,” emphasizing the desire for connection. “Slide” and “Mobbin in DC” (featuring Foggieraw) offer a more honest portrayal of contemporary love and the emotional restlessness that can leave someone “goin’ crazy at 2 am in the morning.”
“Speak Your Mind” and “Leave Me Alone" take on a more upbeat sound, incorporating an homage to house music and reggaeton. “Unicorn” explores a more mystical perspective on life and the desire for someone to “fall in love within her world.” Meanwhile, “Hot Mess” expresses vulnerability through the idea of "quitting so many times and coming back one more time,” ultimately emphasizing that she does not “need to be perfect, just someone who tries.”
Through Disc 2, Lennox delves deeper into internal vulnerability and intimacy within the modern dating scene, expressing a yearning to be loved and to be seen wholeheartedly. Through the intentional instrumentation of piano, trumpet, synths, paired with melodic R&B and neo-soul influences, Lennox explores the toxicity and tenderness of love from a fresh perspective. While the original 15 tracks establish the emotional and musical foundation of Vacancy, the deluxe tracks expand upon it by reflecting the complexities of romance in the digital age. Vacancy: Late Checkout captures the exhaustion, adrenaline, uncertainty, and longing that accompany romance in a digitally saturated age where the motivation to pursue genuine connection can sometimes feel like it is fading.
